How to make technical training useful at work

Plan the programme around job decisions and follow-through, as well as the topic.

Start with a workplace task

Choose the task the team should perform more confidently after training: interpreting a process diagram, maintaining a useful operating log or explaining a treatment stage.

Match the depth to the audience

Operators, design engineers and technical-sales teams need different levels of detail. Separate what everyone needs to understand from the material intended for specialists.

Use familiar examples

A suitable process diagram or anonymised operating record can help connect an abstract idea with the workplace. Confirm that any shared material is appropriate for the audience.

Let participants apply the idea

Build in a short exercise or discussion. Ask the team to explain the reasoning behind a decision, rather than only recalling a definition.

Plan the follow-through

Agree who will support the team afterwards and how the learning will be used. A revised checklist or a short review meeting can make the programme part of normal work.

Put it into practice.
